Question by adam m: whats the point of someone using my email to spam with?
I just got a “free replica watches” spam sent from my own email to myself , and probably to others. :) I turned them in to the yahoo administrators though which got traced back to some geocities website, and I also had to change my email password that I’ve had for years. Whats the point though, why don’t they just use their own email? Are they just trying to show that they are clever or what?
Yeah I heard about the zombie thing, I haven’t noticed it going any slower though as I have cable internet. Those bastards! Replica watches, probably all my friends think I’m selling watches now.

Spamming is illegal. So spammers will find computers (usu. with insufficient security programs) and take remote control of that computer (called a zombie computer) and direct that computer to spew out spam. All you will notice is that your machine is running slow.

When spammers are caught, the fines are substantial (they can loose everything). The only trouble is that the government has done a poor job of enforcing the Can Spam Act.

My email address is sheilanat2001@yahoo.com and the spam uses a sender address of sheilanat2003@yahoo.com advertising such things as insurance and replica watches. If I report it as spam I will not be able to send myself important info from one account to the other as I sometime find it necessary to do. It would be sent to my bulk folder, which I never read and empty whenever I sign in. How can I stop these people from using unauthorized email addresses to send mail to me?

yeah just block it.. its not coming from your other email address but chances are you have your accounts linked together.. so when it goes to one account it all goes through one email… spam is just a part of life.. just block it and report it as spam.. lol

Over the last months I started unsubscribing from spam. I went from getting several hundred messages in my spam folder each month to getting a few dozen.

The ones that are left are for Viagra and other pharmaceuticals, replica watches, hot girls, etc. None of these can be unsubscribed too…in fact my e-mail account often warns me do delete the messages and not click links because they are not coming from who they say they are or are phishing.

My goal is 99% spam free. I know my email sorts it well, but I want zero spam. I know where it comes from…more than 5 years I used this email for some survey scams…I know now to use a throw away e-mail address if I’m curious about online opportunities like that. Now that I’m wiser, I’m still cleaning up after my mistake.

I have been receiving a lot of junk mail (auto filtered, thankfully) from various yahoo members, most of them from people with the same first name as me, from emails that start helen.lastname. Figuring it is just random spammers, I’ve ignored it.

Now I’ve received an email from MY OWN email address to THE SAME email address asking me to clik on a dodgy link to buy replica watches!!

I want to report these people, but the abuse reporter in yahoo looks lik it wil simply block the email address it was snet from – IE MINE!! what should I do??

And how the heck are these people sending emails from my email account??

Hi it’s a problem we all have. The only solution I have found is to have a seperate e-mail address which I only give to trusted contacts. I change this every so often.It stops the spam for a while at least. I If you allow e-mail on Yahoo answers anyone can get your address. Good luck and hope this helps.

Lately I have been getting a lot of spam when i check my yahoo mail. it catches it all but i don’t know why i get them. they all have to do with replicas, watches and other special offers. I have joied a few reputable message boards lately but i was wondering if these can be false positives or something maybe accidentally generated by yahoo.

For the past couple weeks, I keep getting spam about replicas watches or something in my Gmail. There is NO unsubscribe button, and my gmail filters don’t work on spam. How can I get them to stop sending me random emails?

First, never-EVER-ever reply to a spam. All that does is confirm that a human person is reading a spam in a valid email account.

Second, spam is a fact of life on the net, an it will never ever stop. Ever.

Third, this is a ‘yahoo mail’ Q/A area, and I don’t use gmail enough to know anything about their filters. It’s even off topic enough to be deleted and my account ‘dinged’ but since it appears you didn’t know enough about not ‘replying’ to spam I thought it worth the risk.

Fourth, see first, never reply to spam. Shouldn’t even open them because image links may contain codes that identify your email address as ‘valid.’

Last, it’s already too late. Once you start receiving ‘more’ spam on an account, it will never stop and only gets worse.

The sensible thing would be to cancel your Yahoo email address and inform all the other contacts from your NEW yahoo email that you believe you were spammed

It had my exact yahoo address ( in sent from column) but I checked and it was not in my sent folder.. I have changed my password, I am just trying to figure out what else I can do…any suggestions? and How in the heck did they do that???

I started getting these about a year ago.
Since I never email myself I just marked them all as spam and eventually they went away.

to my knowledge “spamming” is illegal, right?

so why do i get junk in my email about increasing sizes in body parts, or get replica watches, or designer handbags, cheap lasik, the list goes on………….

is the market for these things really SO HUGE that these people are willing to risk their company legally to advertise this?

or are these emails just ways to steal my identity/give me viruses?

Spam in the U.S. is only illegal if the subject does not indicate that it is an advertisement. Most spam comes from other countries where it is not illegal. The only purpose is to make money. If one in a thousand buys something it has paid for itself.
